JFD216: Cards of Death, Belladonna of Sadness, Killing American Style

Things get really weird this week on Junk Food Dinner. Parker Bowman's on the road so we call in the ghostly Mark Freado, and we're also joined by special guest Zack Carlson of Bleeding Skull and Destroy All Movies for a lively chat about 35mm, misplaced irony, fat ten-year-olds and shot on video oddities!

First up, a nearly lost film is rediscovered and released on VHS in BLEEDING SKULL VIDEO's very first release, Cards of Death from 1986! Strange Nazi-themed killers, deadly tarot cards, and a surprisingly bloody sexual appetite populate the mysterious W.G. MacMillan's only directorial effort, and we have lots of things to say about it.

Next up, we freak out in Japan with Eiichi Yamamoto's psychedelic, grotesque, and beautiful Belladonna of Sadness from 1973! Incredibly inventive (and perverted) animated sequences are used to tell the story of a tortured peasant in a feudal land who is accused of witchcraft, and some really weird stuff happens. Trust us.

Finally, we tackle another almost-lost VHS gem, from low-budget Iranian-born American film guru Amir Shervan, 1990's Killing American Style! This goofy action movie with high aspirations stars Robert Z'Dar, Harold Diamond and Jim Brown, and serves as the unofficial finale to a loose trilogy including Hollywood Cop and Samurai Cop. Implausibly staged shoot-outs and generous portions of T&A populate this fun but potentially brain-dead action-fest.

All this plus witty banter between friends, not a single Yacht Party, an all-star lineup of callers, the forbidden fruit of late night television, water droplets, phantom handjobs, sick-ass gold jackets and so much more!

Put on your swimsuit, grab your towel and apply some sunscreen because this week JFD is bringing you some fun in the sun with our action-packed beach theme show!

Up first, Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello have outgrown their beach party past and are living in Ohio with their punk rock son Bobby. But, on their way to Hawaii, they stop off in L.A. to visit their daughter (played by Full House's Lori Loughlin). But there's trouble in paradise as marital problems, surf punks and giant waves threaten to ruin their good time. Add cameos by Don Adams, O.J. Simpson, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Dick Dale, Gilligan, The Skipper and Pee-Wee fuckin' Herman and you have a recipe for fun in 1987's Back to the Beach.

Next, Corey Feldman visits his brother (Keith Coulouris) who runs a school for beach bums in Florida owned by his uncle (The Munsters' Al Lewis). But when a goofy gangster played by James Hong threatens to take away the school after a volleyball bet, it's up to the boys to assemble a volleyball team to reclaim what's theirs. Plenty of fake boobs and bad jokes abound in 1996's South Beach Academy.

Finally, Meg Foster plays a teenage hippy runaway whose travels find her on a private beach owned by Jason (Laurence Harvey) and his sister Grace (Joanna Pettet). They invite the young girl to stay with them but she soon realizes these generous property owners are more sinister than they appear. Murder and mayhem ensue in the horror thriller Welcome to Arrow Beach (AKA Tender Flesh) from 1974.

All this plus witty banter between friends, goddamn death dedications, boxers with boners, Nerd News, Blu-rays, dozens of Ohio references and so much more!

Sean's out this week, so we're joined by Jamie Jenkins from The Skeleton Crew, Devour the Podcast, Lychan It, Evil Episodes and Direct to Video Connoisseur podcasts!

Up first, Jamie brings us a tale about two English strangers who find themselves battling the zombies after a device used to kill insects accidentally raises the dead in 1974's Let Sleeping Corpses Lie (AKA The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue) (AKA Don't Open the Window) (AKA Do Not Speak Ill of the Dead) (AKA Jesus Christ, how many titles does this movie have anyway?!)

Next, a gang of drug-taking, law breaking, pyschopathic bikers cause mayhem as they travel from town to town. But after a shoot out with some strippers in Richard Nixon masks, the gang breaks into the home of scientist and takes him, his daughter and his guests hostage. Things get pretty ghoulish and Bigfoot himself even shows up! It's all here in Dear God No! from 2011.

Finally, in an effort to cash in on the trend of goofy 70's super hero TV shows, CBS made a TV movie about Captain America, intended to be a pilot for a future show. However, the show never got picked up and all that remains is this, part 1 of a two part movie series starring Reb Brown as the iconic symbol of the USA.

All this plus witty banter between friends, Amy Fisher movies, Nerd News, Blu-rays, Corey talk and so much more!

JFD256: Sisters, Dressed to Kill, Blow Out

JFD is back and still riding high off our 5-year anniversary we decide to take it up a notch by inviting none other than Cory from the world famous Illogical Contraption radio show to come on and party with us! And party we shall, because this episode is no regular-ass episode, oh no. Tonight we explore some early films from one of the masters of suspense Mr. Brian De Palma!

Up first, Margot Kidder is a French-Canadian living in New York. When she appears on a hidden camera game show with Lisle Wilson, the two go out on a date. But she's carrying a dark secret involving her twin sister which leads to murder. But when her neighbor across the street (Jennifer Salt) witnesses the murder, the race is on to figure out just what the hell is going on in Sisters from 1973.

Then, Angie Dickinson is a frustrated MILF living with her husband and son. But after a random hook-up at an art museum, she is murdered in an elevator by a mysterious "woman". It's then up to her shrink (Michael Caine), her son (Keith Gordon), a cop (Dennis Franz) and a hooker (Nancy Allen) to figure out just what the hell is going on in Dressed to Kill from 1980.

And finally, John Travolta is a sound engineer for crummy b-movies (you know, like the ones we cover on this podcast), but when he's out one night recording sound effects, he witnesses a car drive off the road and into a stream. After saving the girl inside (Nancy Allen) he finds out that the guy driving the car was a potential presidential candidate and it's up to him, Nancy Allen and Dennis Franz to figure out just what the hell is going on in Blow Out from 1981.

All this plus witty banter between friends, the return of Grandpa, penis enhancement chat, cute little butts, Nerd News and Blu-rays/DVDs, absolute confidentiality, Hithcock comparisons galore, the Memphis Maniac, RoboTech pajamas, continued lack of police involvement and a whole lot more!

JFD257: America's Deadliest Home Video, Aswang, North Dixie Drive

Junkies! Rejoice, for episode 257 is upon us! We are joined by Josh from Lunchmeat Magazine this week.

First, we take a look at a very early entry in the Found Footage/POV genre: "America's Deadliest Home Video" from 1993. This SOV flick stars Danny Bonaduce and Melora Walters ("Boogie Nights"). It's also directed by the dude who did "Wild Things 2," so that's pretty weird.

Next, we finally get around to a movie that's been requested by listeners for years: "Aswang" from 1994. A pregnant woman deals with weird Phillipino vampire monsters while in rural Wisconsin... for some reason. The movie turns out to be ... GROOVY.

Finally, we watch a documentary about Parker's hometown of Dayton, Ohio called "North Dixie Drive." The film looks at a part of town hit by a failing economy and an obsolete automobile industry that has since fallen into disrepair. And the eccentric folks who live there.

All this, plus Nerd News, DVDs, Mad Max Chat, Mark from Oakland's strongest "It's Okay" yet, Sweetman reflecting on Sweetman, Voicemails, skypiness, hot dogs, JFD Grandpa, a weird intro and so much more!

JFD221: War of the Stars, Traxx, SymbioPsychoTaxiPlasm: Take One

It's a weird episode this week, Junkies, as we do a fan edit of a classic, a (possible) genius satire and a meta documentary.

First, a young farmer saves the galaxy with the Force in 2010's "War of the Stars: A New Hope Grindehoused." The Man Behind the Mask re-edited George Lucas' original 1977 "Star Wars" to fit in with the Grindehouse aesthetic we love so much on JFD. The movie is re-cut, re-scored and re-diculous now. Next, radio legend Shadoe Stevens is a lawman who just wants to kill and bake cookies in "Traxx" from 1988. Lawman Traxx is tasked with cleaning up and "taming" a violent Texas town, while simultaneously trying to get his cookie-making business off the ground.

Finally, a film crew is hired to film a film crew that's following a feature film in 1968's "Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One." Steven Soderbergh championed the restoration of this film and Criterion has released it.

All this plus witty banter between friends, Mystery voicemails, Virtual Mark, suspicion about Kevin's absence, "these limp wrists," Comic Con Chat and so much more!

JFD258: Massacre Mafia Style, Gone with the Pope, The Beaver Trilogy

Parker’s taking his own mysterious desert vacation this week, and as a result we’re joined with another famous Daytonite, Ryan from the Illumi-Nati Podcast! It’s a wild ride as we discuss Duke Mitchell’s entire filmography (two flicks!), and an entire Beaver Trilogy (one flick!). Uncover the secrets of Italian American lounge singers and small-town talent shows together with us!

Up first, we delve into our accidental theme show with Duke Mitchell’s exploitation debut, Massacre Mafia Style (aka The Executioner, aka Like Father Like Son) from 1978! The son of a Sicilian mafia boss moves to Hollywood to stake his own claim to the family name. Duke Mitchell wrote, directed, stars, and provides the music for this sleazy grind house Godfather rip-off, which features some of the craziest exploding caskets you’ll ever find at any funeral.

Next! The Duke Mitchell insanity continues with Gone with the Pope from 2010! Previously unreleased and unfinished, Grindhouse Releasing went the extra mile to complete and restore this film decades later, and the result is as nuts as Duke’s first (and only other) movie. In this follow up, Duke finds himself involved in a plot to kidnap the Pope and demand a one dollar ransom from all the Christians in the world. And that ending!

Finally, we head up to the mountains and stop in a little town with some little secrets, with 2000’s The Beaver Trilogy. Comprised of three individual segments filmed over the course of several years, all covering the same subject, and featuring the likes of Crispin Glover and Sean Penn (as well as the music of Olivia Newton John), this movie is the weirdo 80s low-fi Rashomon/Hedwig mash-up you’ve always been waiting for! It’s weird in all the right ways.

All this plus witty banter between friends, Robotic Overtones, Hot Dog Podcasting, A Dixie Dust-Up, The Sweetest Sheets and the Beach Boys, Dishwash Talk, French Ticklers, Nerd News and This Week in DVD, The Mysterious Stuart, Confusing Release Dates, absolute confidentiality, continued lack of police involvement, sneezes, belches, gleeks and a whole lot more!

JFD213: Gojira, Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster, Godzilla (2014)

Oh, no! There goes Tokyo! This week JFD goes Godzilla!

First up, we meet up with the grand-daddy of them all, the original King of the Kaiju, 1954’s Gorjia! Black and white, moody, and with a higher caliber of acting, the original film stands alone from the series. Spoiler alert: Tokyo gets smashed.

Next up, we trip out to the groovy sounds on Mount Fuji with 1971’s Godzilla vs the Smog Monster! Bizarre pollution monster Hedorah takes on Godzilla, and only a weak-ass band of bearded longhairs stands in his way. And some little kid, of course.

Finally, we break out of our caves and venture bravely into the real world to see the new Godzilla from 2014! We’ve had our checkered past with the glutton of cult remakes/reboots/rehashes Hollywood has thrown our way recently, but how will we react to the big guy’s return to the screen? Well, why are you asking me? Just listen already.

All this plus witty banter between friends, Mike-sell’s Potato Chips, Sean Byron: The Freddy Krueger of Facebook, VHS Conventions Chat, Monster Skepticism, That One Time in Bakersfield with the Evangelion Movie, Gearing up for Halloween, Surprising Eyepatches, Heavy Factory Doobies and so much more!

Summer's officially here kids, so Junk Food Dinner getting the time machine out of the garage, firing it up and traveling back to that distant time, the early 80's, to raid the local video store's horror shelf. But we're not on this adventure alone. No, this week we are joined by none other than Mike Dikk from the world-famous Kissing Contest Podcast.

Up first, Clint Howard summons the Dark Lord himself via some ancient text and an ancient computer in order to get the power he needs to exact revenge on the bullies and teachers who are making his life a living hell (get it) in Evilspeak from 1981.

Then, three 10-year-old kids who share a birthday turn murderous due to an eclipse on the night they were born. These vicious tykes (including the lovable scamp Billy Jacoby) get real raw as they pick of family members and neighbors in 1981's Bloody Birthday.

And finally, Michael Ironside is a racist, misogynist psychopath who doesn't take too kindly to female reporter Lee Grant's progressive views. But when his first attempt at bumping her off fails, he begins to terrorize the hospital where she's a patient. Also William Shatner pops in and out for no reason in 1982's Visiting Hours.

All this plus witty banter between friends, requests to keep up the good work, stories about crying, Nerd News, Blu-rays, vintage 7-Up cans and so much more!

Welcome to our nightmare this week as Junk Food Dinner checks out three Fake Freddy Fiascos! These flicks all borrow heavily from A Nightmare on Elm Street, but are they a dream come true? It depends on how much you enjoy moonwalking.

First up, an Indian Michael Jackson impersonator, silly kung fu fights, harrowing gang-rapes, songs about picnics, and a certain razor-gloved dream demon collide in 1993's Bollywood Freddy movie Mahakaal aka The Monster! This bizarre fusion of elements shouldn't work at all, but the Ramsay brothers manage to pull off something special. It has boogers!

Next up, we check out David DeCoteau's feature debut Dreamaniac from 1986! This Charles Band production features an awesome VHS cover on Wizard Video, but can the movie compare? We hope you like underpants.

Finally, we tackle another Freddy rip-off, 1988's Bad Dreams! The always-creepy Richard Lynch plays a crispy-faced cult leader stalking Jennifer Rubin through a mental hospital in this clear rip-off of A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 3! With extra-spooky fire effects!

All this plus witty banter between friends, the Darko/Arsenio connection, an all-star lineup of callers, tales of the wild west, Nightmare Feddy's, burps, sneezes and so much more!

What's that terrible smell coming from the basement of Junk Food Dinner studios? It's the unmistakable stench of GHOUL SUMMER! You sick fucks asked for it, so now you've got it! TWO WEEKS of Ghoul Summer this year. And we're kicking things off correctly by bringing in a professional ghoul, The Memphis Maniac(!) to pick our three ghoulish features this week.

Up first, while the Nazis get all the ghoulish attention, The Men Behind the Sun from 1988 shows that the Japanese were up to some serious ghoulish shit during World War II as well.. This Chinese film tells the tale of Squadron 731, a prison camp where Japanese soldiers and scientists commit gruesome atrocities against prisoners. This flick also earns bonus ghoul points for using real cadavers and animal cruelty.

Next, Shin'ya Tsukamoto smacks us upside the skull with his frantic, industrial horror art flick Tetsuo, the Iron Man  from 1989 about a man whose body begins to transform into machinery. Shot in black & white and at a breakneck pace, this tight and abrasive film starts out nuts and never lets up.

Finally, shortly after the arrest of one of the most notorious serial killers, the low-budget horror flick The Secret Life: Jeffrey Dahmer was released in 1993 in an attempt to cash in on the morbid curiosity surrounding the crimes at the time. Directed by David R. Bowen and starring Carl Crew as the Milwaukee cannibal, this crude flick, despite it's shortcomings, found its way onto a surprising amount of video store shelves due to its sensational nature.

All this plus witty banter between ghouls, apes with machine guns, metal songs, Nerd News, Blu-rays, Chick Tracks, The Mephis Maniac pissing and so much more!
